I've had the same question. I have a family HSA, my daughter incurred substantial medical bills in the first couple of months of the year, and then was accepted into Medicaid in April.

I see no reason why a parent can't have an HSA while the child is on Medicaid. But I had assumed that I wouldn't be able to use my HSA for my daughter. However, I've been reading IRS publication 969, which deals with HSAs. After reading the section entitled "Distributions From an HSA," I'm convinced that I can use the HSA for my daughter's expenses. Take a look and let me know if you see something I don't.
