How do HSA contribution limits change when switching from single coverage to family coverage during the year?

My wife has HDHP single coverage and we recently added our newborn to her plan. Does she automatically get to contribute the maximum for family coverage (2010 - $6150) or is it pro-rated based on number of months single and then number of months family coverage during the plan year?

The IRS guidelines on this are not very clear and leave this up to the employer to decide. Most employers will allow you to contribute to the family max during that year while others pro-rate your maximum based on when you switched coverage levels.

The best thing to do is to contact her HR department to determine what their policy is.
